Calming colors for home using your personal element

Now is a time for rebalancing and regaining your calm. It is time to focus on the inner you and find love and joy in your heart with an environment that promotes feelings of peace and relaxation. As you spend more time inside the house you may want to relook at your home environment or simply give it an energetic yet restful boost.

Generally calming colors are light shades of blue, blue grey, off white and green.  They are nature’s soothers. Light pink is also good – but more for the bedroom!

However these colors can also be a bit boring when not matched with accent colors or touches. A pillow here a painting there and a plant to bring life and nature into your house.

Another thing to consider is your Feng Shui element determined by the year you were born. This is a way of finding colors that resonate with you.

I have found that metal elements gravitate to earth tones of yellows, tan, orange and brown as earth creates metal and so these colors support the person with a metal element year of birth. Metal colors such as white, grey, gold and silver also support a person with a metal element year of birth. Both these combinations of elements are good to add as a highlight to a room that is occupied by a person with a metal element year of birth. They can also be used as the main color.

A friend of mine is a fire element and gravitates to greens and loves plants as this feeds fire. Reds and oranges are also a favorite as they are fire element colors. Again they would be highlights in a room. They do not have to be the dominant color – it is just enough to bring the calming color to life.

A Water element would like – you guessed it – blues, black and even purple for water as well as metal colors, as metal produces water- think of a cold metal water flask.

A Wood element would like greens for the wood part and blues which would feed a wood element.

An earth element would gravitate to earth colors and also fire colors as these feed earth.

Give it a try and see how you feel with different color accents.   It is fun and may be enlightening as well as soothing.

Here is a way to determine your element from your year of birth so that you can experiment with the corresponding colors.

  • Metal: Birth years ending in 0 or 1
  • Water: Birth years ending in 2 or 3
  • Wood: Birth years ending in 4 or 5
  • Fire: Birth years ending in 6 or 7
  • Earth: Birth years ending in 8 or 9
